Keeping Your Skin’s Microbiome Balanced – It’s Important!

Did you know that there are millions of microorganisms currently living on and in your body? Yes, it’s true. Imagine your body is a planet and your skin is home to a vast variety of bacteria, viruses and fungi.

What’s more is these microorganisms are actually essential in maintaining healthy skin and their diversity is crucial to a balanced microbiome. All of the microorganisms living on your skin are in constant conversation with the skin cells to keep a healthy balance. The bad (unhealthy) microorganisms are minimized and eliminated by the good (healthy) microorganisms and the body’s harsh environment; dry, acidic and lacking in nutrients from which bacteria feed. This is a constant battle, and a “balance’ between both good and bad bacteria is important. This is a lesson we can all understand; too much of a good thing isn’t always good!

Here are some facts you should be aware of: Over the past few decades there has been a dramatic increase in skin diseases and allergies. Slightly more than 10% of the population of the United States suffer from eczema. Adult onset Acne is also increasing and now affecting nearly 22% of all women. Nearly 60% of our population is identified as having “sensitive” skin. Many of the most common adverse skin conditions today have been directly linked to an unbalanced microbiome!

We also know that environmental factors have become a huge threat to the health of our skin. Clearly, urban pollution, toxic chemicals released into the air, or simply overexposure to radiation from the Sun, have a direct influence on the microbiome causing inflammation and unhealthy skin conditions. Furthermore, we now also know that even some of the products we apply to our skin can destroy the balance of our microbiome and lead to serious consequences.

Columbia SkinCare is leading the effort in providing skincare products developed with an understanding of the microbiome. Our products recognize the diversity of our skin’s microorganisms. Rather than suppress the natural life in your skin, our products are created to protect and promote a health balance in the skin’s microbiome.
